The Neva River, lined with the Hermitage's buildings, is one of the most beautiful sights of the city. The windows of the Winter Palace afford a fine view of the river slowly carrying its deep waters to the Gulf of Finland. It is always so changeable: now it is ice-bound, with paths beaten across it in the snow; now as calm as a mirror, with tourist river-boats plying between its banks; and now as furious as a beast, threatening to flood the whole city with its leaden-coloured waters.
