The Hermitage Theatre is one of the best buildings created by Giacomo Quarenghi. It was constructed at the corner of the Winter Canal and the Neva embankment in 1783-89. The auditorium is designed as an antique amphitheatre with six rows of seats. The columns decorating the walls have unusual capitals embellished with theatre masks. Both the walls and the columns are covered with coloured artificial marble. The niches bear plaster statues depicting the nine Muses and Apollo. The medallions arranged over the niches represent profiles of prominent playwrights. On the stage of the Hermitage Theatre performed celebrated Russian actors of the 18th and 19th centuries. Since January 1991 the Hermitage Theatre has revived its activities.
