The small palace, known as the Small Chambers in the Emperor's lifetime, was part of his private residence. It was designed by Georg Mattarnovi in 1716-20. The three surviving rooms on the ground floor, once occupied by the Emperor, are now used to display reconstructed interiors of the period. The corner room was occupied by Peter the Great's Turnery. The original stove and walls are faced with cobalt-painted tiles. The duplicating lathe and more than 150 cutters originate from Peter's famous Turnery. On display are memorial objects once owned by Peter the Great - his arshin-long walking stick, his pince-nez goggles and the safe-box presented to Peter the Great by the Polish King Augustus II the Strong. The room is decorated with the marine landscape by Peter's favourite Dutch painter Adam Silo.
