In 1976-1989 fragments of the original winter residence of Peter the Great were discovered in the course of research carried out by architects in the Hermitage Theatre. The palace facing the Neva River was built to the design of Georg Mattarnovi in several stages from 1719 to 1723. Peter the Great spent his last years in this palace and died here in 1725. The State Courtyard is surrounded from two sides by the arches of the passage galleries with a balustrade and a suite of the palace chambers of Peter's winter residence. The piece of land in front of the facade is paved with clinker bricks, as it was in Peter's time, while the rising part of the courtyard ground is cobbled (mid-18th century). On display at the exhibition is the carriage of Peter the Great, a very rare example of early 18th-century vehicles. |
