Venus in a Seashell

1712

Guillaume Coustou

Collection of Peter I

The sculpture of Venus in a Seashell is dated and signed. It was made in 1712 by the French sculptor Guillaume Coustou (1677–1746). It is presumably one of his early works.

This Venus entered the Hermitage in 1923 from the Sheremetevs’ collection and then adorned the Hanging Garden of the Small Hermitage where it was replaced by a copy in 1981
