2: The Large Chamber

Tapestry from The Story of King Perseus of MacedoniaSeries

17th century

Italy.

Wool and silk

Five 17th-century tapestries adorn the walls of the Large Chamber. They form a single set connected by a common subject - the story of King Perseus of Macedonia, whose miserliness cost him dear, causing him to lose a battle. He was taken prisoner and then died. One of the tapestries bears a woven inscription: E. PALMA. AQVEV. INVE. 1677 (possibly 1611).
By the late 1720s, on Peter the Great's initiative and with Menshikov's involvement, the production of tapestries was established in St Petersburg.
