5: Main Staircase

Ceiling

The ceiling above the main staircase is decorated with a delicate relief moulding featuring exquisite monograms of Peter’s daughter, Empress Elizabeth. It dates from the period when the Cadet Corps occupied the building (1740s).
The hanging lantern with crystal oak-leaves is one of the earliest example of the kind of lighting devices used in the first third of the 18th century incorporating crystal glass that the glassworks were only just learning how to produce.
