5: The Main Staircase

Plafond

The ceiling above the Main Staircase is decorated with a delicate relief moulding featuring a recurrent exquisite monogram of Peter's daughter, Empress Elizabeth - EI. It dates from the period when the Cadet Corps occupied the building.
The hanging lantern is one of the earliest examples of the kind of lighting devices used in the first third of the 18th century. It incorporates crystal glass that the glassworks, including those belonged to Alexander Menshikov, were only just learning how to produce.
