11: Varvara's Chamber
Tiled interior First quarter of the 18th century Holland This room is decorated with high-quality tiles with a variety of painted subjects including figures of people and Dutch landscapes. On the ceiling there are splendid tiles with sea subjects featuring fish, tritons and naiads. The stove is faced with tiles made in St Petersburg in the early 18th century. In contrast to the precisely drawn Dutch tiles, the designs on the Russian ones are softer and more painterly, while the depictions of fabulous birds, allegorical personages from Ovid's Metamorphoses, flowers and houses are infused with the spirit of popular prints and humour. |
