Deluge tapestry

Late 17th century

Flanders

In keeping with the courtly etiquette of the early 18th century, the bed on baluster legs stands in the centre of the room. It is of a type common in the 16th and 17th centuries adorned by a headboard with relief carving and a tester supported by four columns. On the bed is a rare Turkish cover of the early 18th century made of heavy fabric whose beige-gold background is covered with embroidered plant ornament. A large Brussels tapestry of the late 17th century almost completely covers the northern wall, making the tiled bedroom warm and cosy. The tapestry has a Baroque decorativeness. Its broad edge bearing depictions of plants and fruit puts one in mind of an elaborated carved frame. The main scene was inspired by the biblical story of the Deluge.
