The two-tier carved walnut cupboard (South Germany, 17th century) is adorned by a special clock with a figured case of ebony and dyed wood. The clock was produced by the German craftsman Abraham III Habrecht (1654–1758) in the year 1695. On occasion it was necessary to find out the time at night. This clock is constructed in such a way that if one reached out and pulled a dangling cord, a special chiming mechanism was set in motion. Low notes indicated the full hours and high notes the quarters, so without lighting a candle or lamp, it was possible to tell the time to within 15minutes. Alongside on the floor stands a chamber pot from the early 18th century. This common feature of life at that time has survived only due to the fact that it belonged to Peter the Great.
