12: The Western Antechamber
Mirror with a console Mirror in a carved walnut frame Late 17th century Italy Casket Second half of the 17th century Augsburg, Germany The centre of the south wall is occupied by a large mirror
in a carved walnut frame created in Italy in the late 17th century, above
a console table, also of walnut, that is decorated with striking carving.
There too is a casket made in Augsburg in the second half of the same
century of wood, silver foil, silver filigree, semiprecious stones and
other minerals. The casket is in effect a kind of mineral collection as
was very popular at the time. Flanking the mirror are black wooden gueridons
with gilding on which stand silver candlesticks made in the Baltic region
and a large partially gilded silver ewer with a lid made by Hinrich Friedrichs
of Riga in the early 18th century
