14: The Bedchamber of Daria Menshikova
Vase with a lid Early 18th century Arita ware, Japan This large decorative vase bearing a depiction of a landscape with a pavilion, blossoming trees and water-buffalo was produced in the workshops of Arita in the early eighteenth century for export to Europe. The shoulders of the vase carry a red and gold plant pattern and trees in diamond-shaped stamps. Items manufactured at Arita and exported through the port of Imari were very well known in Europe. A distinctive feature of Arita ware is the colour scheme dominated by various shades of blue combined with red and gold. Favourite motifs for this porcelain were “flowers and birds” and landscapes that allowed the artists to fully exploit the decorative possibilities of the method. |
