Of the rich original décor of this room in which the
secretaries worked only the ceiling has survived. It is decorated
with strips of moulding and eight stucco medallions bearing depictions
of the ancient goddesses Demeter and Themis. The furnishing of the
room accords with its function. On the open flap of a carved walnut
writing-desk (Northern Italy, 16th – first half of the 17th
century) we can see a copper inkwell with enamel ornament (Moscow,
17th century). A little cabinet standing on the table is of the same
style and period as the writing-desk. Here too there is an armillary
sphere (England, early 18th century) that came from the Kunstkammer.
The interior is adorned by a portrait of Peter the Great painted by
an unknown artist and also engravings, notably a large-format pair
(after 1725) from the Views of Cities series published in Amsterdam
from the beginning of the 17th century. |
