8: The Bedchamber of Alexander Menshikov
Portable cabinet Late 17th century Spain Wood and gold-tooled leather The portable cabinet made in Spain in the late 17th century is trimmed with coloured leather decorated in two ways: gold-tooling and a techniqueusing a needle to make a design into which gold powder was rubbed. The cabinet is used to display Russian and Western European commemorative medals. Menshikov possessed a large numismatic collection that he began while travelling with the Great Embassy. That epoch-making journey was itself commemorated by a medal bearing a depiction of Fiodor Golovin, the second-ranking ambassador in the party, made by an unknown Dutch medallist. Menshikov's collection included medals marking events in the Northern War and also Western European commemorative medals. Among the latter are pieces dedicated to monarchs: King Louis XIV of France, Electors of Saxony and Kings of Poland. Displayed here are also medals dedicated to Peter I and Catherine I. |
