This hall is used to display the monumental-decorative
Story of Psyche cycle that was produced by Maurice Denis in
1908 to a commission from the collector Ivan Morozov. The series of
thirty panels - and also ceramic vases and furniture made to Denis's
designs - was intended to adorn the concert hall of Morozov's mansion
on the street called Prechistenka in Moscow. Four bronze statues by
the sculptor Maillol, a friend of Denis, superbly enhanced Morozov's
collection of different art forms. Following the German invasion in
1941, the panels were removed from the walls and rolled up. They were
unrolled in 1951, after the series had been transferred to the Hermitage.
The display is housed in the former library of the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs. The interior decoration of the room has not survived. |
