11: Maurice Denis's decorative ensemble The Story of Psyche. Room 1
1908 Denis, Maurice The third panel. Psyche breaks the rule that she must never look on the face of her mysterious spouse. At night, burning with curiosity, she lights a lamp and gazes with delight on the sleeping young god. Unexpectedly a drop of boiling oil falls from the lamp and painfully burns Cupid's tender skin. The god wakes up and flies off in a rage. Psyche, hopelessly in love, roams the world seeking her divine husband. In desperation the girl goes to Venus, her mistress and infuriated mother-in-law. |
