11: Maurice Denis's decorative ensemble The Story of Psyche. Room 1

The Story of Psyche. Third Panel. Psyche Discovered that her Secret Lover is Cupid

1908

Denis, Maurice

The third panel. Psyche breaks the rule that she must never look on the face of her mysterious spouse. At night, burning with curiosity, she lights a lamp and gazes with delight on the sleeping young god. Unexpectedly a drop of boiling oil falls from the lamp and painfully burns Cupid's tender skin. The god wakes up and flies off in a rage. Psyche, hopelessly in love, roams the world seeking her divine husband. In desperation the girl goes to Venus, her mistress and infuriated mother-in-law.

The panel is constructed in the manner of an easel painting and produces the best impression of the entire series. Here the "open" bright pink colour of the naked body is transformed into a pinkish ochre by the lamplight and, thanks to the dark background, the composition becomes more collected. The emphasis on the centre brings out the subject clearly.
