11: Maurice Denis's decorative ensemble The Story of Psyche. Room 1

Spring (without Arms)

1910-1911

Maillol, Aristide

As well as Denis's paintings, Morozov's musical salon was adorned by four statues created by the French sculptor Maillol. The sculptural cycle is sometimes erroneously called The Four Seasons. In reality two statues symbolize the time of flowering and two the time of fruit-bearing. In each of the pairs one figure represents an Ancient Roman deity (Pomona - the goddess of fruit and Flora - the goddess of flowers and gardens), the other a mortal woman.

The Hermitage was recently fortunate enough to acquire a superb antecedent of one of the statues - Spring (without arms) and its inclusion in the display is a reminder of the fellowship between Denis and Maillol. The patina on the statue was produced by the sculptor himself.
