14: The Bonnard Room

Landscape in Dauphiné

C. 1899

Bonnard, Pierre

This painting was produced sometime within the 1890s. The valley of Dauphiné depicted is in the foothills of the Alps, in the vicinity of Grand-Lans where the artist spent his childhood years in his grandfather's house and to which he returned several times later.

Landscape in Dauphiné is a view captured in the Impressionist manner. It is not composed according to a preconceived scheme and we can easily picture in our mind's eye how it might continue on each side. The space is shown way into the depths, as far as the eye can make out. Yet, while for an Impressionist light is more important, for Bonnard the main thing remains colour. The landscape does not immediately capture the attention. One needs time to appreciate the low-key beauty of the dull rather dirty green tones that dominate here and that really do precisely convey the appearance of Dauphiné on an inclement autumn day.
