Portrait of Napoleon

19th-century

Unknown sculptor from the original by Antoine Denis Chaudet

French

A marble bust of Napoleon was produced by the Emperor’s favourite sculptor, Antoine Denis Chaudet, creator of the statue of Bonaparte that was cast from captured cannon and crowned the column on the Place Vendäme in Paris. The bust received the approval of its model and in the years 1810–12 was reproduced in enormous numbers for public institutions. Some fifteen hundred such portraits were created in the marble workshops of Carrara.
