The study in the apartments of Countess Maria Nesselrode was designed
by Carlo Rossi in the 1820s and retains in general its original
architectural décor. The ceiling painting (by Giovanni and
Pietro Scotti) is framed by a gilded cornice, while sculptural panels
on historical subjects over the doors add to the decorativeness
of the interior. On display in the room is the painting by Horace
Vernet Invalid Presenting a Petition to Napoleon at the Parade
of Guards Before the Tuileries Palace in Paris was commissioned
by Nicholas I in 1838, and portraits of military men. Particularly
noteworthy among the uniforms and court attire are a Russian outfit
that belonged to Emperor Alexander I, a Prussian one made for his
brother Grand Duke Konstantin Pavlovich, and a French one worn by
Marshal Michel Ney. Famous Parisian bronze makers produced the mantel
clocks featuring scenes of Hippolytus before Phaedra and Theseus”
(the firm of Choiseul-Gallien, 1820s) and The Parting
of Hector and Andromache (Louis Stanislas Lenoir-Ravrio, first
quarter of the 19th century).
