4: The Corner Drawing-Room
Six-candle Chandelier with Crystal Vase 1822 Andrei Schreiber. To a desighn by Carlo Rossi The Imperial Glass Manufactury St Petersburg,Russia The chandelier takes the form of a crystal amphora suspended on three chains with three pairs of gilded bronze branches bearing bearded male masks emerging from its body. It was created by the craftsman Andrei Schreiber from Rossi's drawing at The Imperial Glass Manufactury in 1822. Schreiber was one of the best known St Petersburg bronze-smiths of the Empire era. He worked under the direction of leading architects as well as developing his own independent designs for bronze articles. From 1817 to the mid-1820s, Schreiber worked on commissions from the architect Carlo Rossi and that period can be considered the most interesting and striking in his career. In 1822, for example, Schreiber received a commission to produce chandeliers, wall-lights and hanging lamps for the decoration of the Yelagin Palace that was constructed for Dowager Empress Maria Fiodorovna. The chandelier for six candles adorned the Empress's dressing room. |
