5: The Marble Drawing Room
Purse 1810 Russia A Purse decorated with embroidery was a typical souvenir gift for the age of sentimentalism. From the late 18th century onwards due to the popularity of engravings, it became fashionable to imitate them in embroidery using the finest silk thread or hair. Since a lady would use her own hair to create an article, such a present had an intimate character. On one side this satin wallet bears an image of trophies surrounded by garlands of flowers, on the other an artillery piece and cannon-balls. This item came into the Hermitage in the 1920s from a private collection. |
