5: The Marble Drawing Room
Dressing Table 1817 Workshop of Martin Guillaume Biennais Paris This dressing table with a "psyché" mirror is adorned by splendid bronze work. It was produced from a design by the architect Charles Percier, who, together with Pierre François Léonard Fontaine, set the fashion in interior furnishing for the Empire period. The table was made for the marriage of Grand Duke Nikolai Pavlovich (the future Nicholas I) that took place in 1817. Originally in the Anichkov Palace in St Petersburg, it was then moved to the suburban palace at Ropsha. The table came into the Hermitage with an altered top, the original marble having been replaced with blue glass. |
