6: The Second Drawing Room
Round table on a three-sided leg Early 19th century To a design by Charles Percier Russia(?) This table with a round top and a single leg that is decorated with gilded bronze was created in the early 19th century on the basis of a design by Percier. The lower part with its three-sided leg resting on feet in the form of sphinxes was created in accordance with that design. The top originally proposed was replaced by a malachite one. Its edge is decorated with chased figures of gilded bronze depicting bacchantes and satyrs. The round top, base and leg are covered with thin sheets of malachite, a typically Russian stone, with a superbly selected pattern (known as "mint velvet"). The features of the Empire style found vivid expression in the striking combination of green malachite and gilded bronze. |
