8: The Dancing Hall

Travelling Set. Composed of Toilet, Tea and Writing Sets
(Necessaire de voyage)

1809

Master Martin Guillaume Biennais

Paris, France

This traveller’s kit belonged to Nikolai Yusupov and includes sixty-four items, comprising toilet, tea, coffee and writing sets. It was produced in 1809 by one of France’s finest craftsmen, Napoleon’s court jeweller Martin Guillaume Biennais who was a real virtuoso at producing compact, convenient and capacious necessaires. That term came into fashion in France in the early 18th century when it referred to containers holding the items need to make tea, coffee or chocolate. With time their construction grew more complex and the number of items in them increased. By the end of the century, besides tea and coffee services, they might include toilet items, six dinner settings and much else.
