9: The Dining-Room
Vase 1821 - 1826 To a design by Carlo Rossi Russia This vase, produced from Kalkan jasper to a design made by the architect Carlo Rossi in 1818, is decorated by carving in the solid stone. A bead-and-reel pattern accentuates the neck of the vase, while it is enveloped by oak leaves below. The four wreathes carved in high relief evoke associations with bronze fittings but do not destroy the integrity of the polished body of the vase. The creation of this article at the Yekaterinburg Lapidary Works began in May 1821 and took five years. In March 1826, together with other completed pieces it was brought to St Petersburg in a convoy of wagons |
