Along the eastern facade of the New Hermitage, constructed in 1842-51
to the design of the architect Leo von Klenze specially for the
collections of art, flow the waters of the Winter Canal framed with
a wrought-iron railing. The canal connects the Moika River with
the Neva. The double arch of the passage gallery over the
Winter Canal and of the bridge on Palace Embankment framing
the view of the Peter and Paul Fortress across the
river produces a charming impression of the oval reflected
in the water.
