The northern pavilion of the Small Hermitage was constructed on the Neva embankment in 1767-69 by the architect Jean-Baptiste Vallin de la Mothe in the style of Early Classicism. Its facade decorated with a colonnade and the statues of Flora and Pomona successfully united the lavish stucco decor of the Baroque Winter Palace with the austere facade of the Large Hermitage designed by the architect Yuri Velten in 1774. The strict design of the Large Hermitage based on a combination of rhythmical horizontal articulation and vertical windows made it possible to blend the building with the existing palatial ensemble into an integrated whole.
