The 19th-century carriages in the display were made by craftsmen
of the Court Carriage Establishment and the factories belonging
to Tuliakov, Christian Tatzky, the Yakovlev brothers and the Frobelius
brothers. The variety of type and purpose of the vehicles reflects
the changes of style and direction in this form of applied art.
The 1807 carriage created by the St Petersburg craftsman G. Geiger
for Emperor Alexander I is a typical example from the first half
of the 19th century. The striving after simplicity and expressiveness
in form manifested itself in the creation of the droshkies, also
made for Alexander I by the craftsman D. Yakovlev. The state carriage
made by the Yakovlev brothers demonstrates the fascination with
the styles of the past typical of the era of Historicism. Here too
visitors can view the large-capacity wagonette of Paul I, the coupé
of Nicholas I, a two-seater phaeton and sleighs.
