Giuseppe Bessi was one of the most prominent Italian exponents of Salon sculpture. His works were very popular at the beginning of the 20th century. This depiction of a young girl in a laurel wreath embodying music is among the sculptor's finest works and he repeated it several times. The work in the Hermitage collection is one of those signed replicas.
