Embroidered Screen

1840s

Russia

109x84x25 cm

Mahogany, wool; carving, cross-stitch embroidery

From the apartment of Trubetskoi

Fire-screens like this were a common item in the homes of the nobility. The top-piece in the form of a carved seashell, an allusion to current fashion trends, made it possible to such articles easily with any furnishings. A special warm cosiness came from the embroidered insets that would as a rule be the work of some female member of the family.
