Pieces from the Pompeian set

1836-39

From the Pompeian Dining-Room of the Winter Palace that was decorated by Alexander Briullov in 1836-39. The furniture in the "Pompeian style" was produced by the Gambs brothers' firm in St Petersburg.

The "Pompeian style" was a new, variant interpretation of the Ancient World. The shape of the chairs derived from the curule chairs that were the prerogative of high officials in Ancient Rome. The painted decoration on the set was inspired by ancient vase painting.
