7: Russian Furniture of the Epoch of Historicism

Chest of drawers

1810s

The workshop of Volkovyssky & Co

St Petersburg

85x108x51 cm

Rosewood, marble and bronze with inlay work

This chest of drawers is an example of the "style furniture" produced by one of the capital's best manufacturers. Items of this kind were not exclusive pieces and were among the display pieces regularly on offer at the firm's shop: they were made as orders were received. The internal construction of the chest of drawers uses plywood, evidence of the latest advances in furniture-making at that time. The marble top was made especially for this piece of furniture. In general the chest of drawers is in the "Louis XVI style".
