14: Russian Painting of the First Half of the 19th Century

Portrait of N.A. Okhotnikov

1820s

Karl Briullov

75 x 60.5 cm

Oil on canvas

The male portraits in the collection of the Department of the History of Russian Culture are fairly varied thematically: likenesses of emperors and grand dukes, depictions of military men, officials and cultural figures, representatives of the aristocracy, lesser nobility and the merchant estate. One of the best is the depiction of N.A. Okhotnikov by Karl Briullov, a rare example of the artist's work as a portraitist in the 1820s.
