Family portraits in the Russian painting of the first half of the 19th century are a still little-studied phenomenon. Despite the fact that they were quite common, relatively few have survived. The collection of the Department of the History of Russian Culture contains some fifty works belonging to this genre: from canvases painted by professionals in the metropolises to the works of anonymous provincial artists.
