Imperial Porcelain Factory and Glassworks

Porcelain, with polychrome overglaze painting, gilding, silvering and platinizing with selective matting

Between 1907 and 1917 the Imperial Porcelain Factory was working on a large sculptural series of The Peoples of Russia. This ethnographic collection comprised 146 male and female figures in festive national costumes from different regions of the empire. The models were produced by the sculptor Pavel Kamensky (1858-1923) on the basis of material from the Ethnographic Department of the Russian Museum of Alexander III and the Emperor Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography. Craftsmen and artists belonging to the factory took part in the creation of the series: Pavel Shmakov, Ivan Zotov, Anatoly Lukin, Andrei Dietrich, Maria Gertsak and Liudmila Midina.
