This room in the New Hermitage was designed for ancient
sculpture. Architecturally it reproduces the inner courtyard (atrium)
of a wealthy Hellenistic or Roman house. The walls are finished with
artificial marble, while the eight columns and two pillars supporting
the beams of the ceiling are made of Carrara marble. The ceiling is
embellished with ornament featuring motifs from Greek painting. The
room contains works of decorative sculpture from the Hellenistic and
Roman periods. Small statues of children represent one of the common
themes in the decorative sculpture of that era. |
