This is one of the galleries on the ground floor of the Winter Palace. It houses works of culture and art produced by the steppe-land tribes of southern Russia in the age of the Sarmatians and the Great Migrations (4th century B.C. - 7th century). Exhibits from the "Novocherkassk Hoard" form a whole complex of gold, silver and bronze artefacts. The grave of a chieftain of one of the barbarian tribes (Concesti village, now in Romania) produced magnificent examples of Byzantine art, including a silver amphora. The display includes archaeological material relating to Finno-Ugric peoples as dating from between the 7th century B.C. and the 14th century, notable is a collection of artistic metalwork from the Kama basin.
