This part of the Winter Palace formerly contained service
rooms. The display here focuses on the culture and art of the ancient
countries of Western Asia. It includes carved gems, terracotta articles
and also examples of writing of various dates from Mesopotamia - clay
tablets and other objects bearing cuneiform texts in the Sumerian
and Akkadian languages: administrative and legal documents, rulers'
founding and dedicatory inscriptions. The most striking exhibits are
reliefs from the palaces of Assyrian rulers of the 9th-7th centuries
B.C.: Ashurnasirapal II and Tiglath-Pileser III at Calah, Sargon II
at Dur Sharrukin and Sennacherib at Nineveh. |
