The Pompeian Room of the New Hermitage is a fairly small
study decorated with murals in the Neo-Grecian style that was originally
intended for the display of jewellery and small rarities. The display-cases
in the room were made in the 19th century to the designs of Leo von
Klenze. The glazed obelisks and pyramids with gilded bronze mounts
and also the Karelian birch cupboards were made in the same style
as the decor of the room. The display presents part of the extremely
rich collection of Roman applied art from the 1st to 3rd century,
a period when the artistic crafts flourished. |
