The display begins with very ancient (4th-3rd millennia
B.C.) works of jewellery from the region of the Northern Caucasus.
The masterpieces of this collection include figurines of bulls and
a vessel bearing depictions of animals against the background of a
mountain landscape (from the Maikop burial mound). The room presents
archaeological finds from burials in the northern Caucasus, southern
Siberia and the northern Black Sea coast, the cities of Olbia and
Panticapaeum. The decoration of the jewellery, swords and scabbards
and sewn-on plaques in the form of animals incorporate motifs from
both Scythian and Greek art. Many of these items were made by Greek
craftsmen to commissions from the Scythian nobility. |
