This room belonged to the suite of five Rooms of War
Paintings, created by Alexander Briullov after the 1837 fire to extol
Russian victories in the period before the Patriotic War of 1812.
Today it is used to display the finest works of the French 18th-century
school in the Hermitage collection. These include 8 works by Antoine
Watteau (1684-1721), the creator of the fête galante genre:
Savoyard with a Marmot, The Capricious Woman, An Embarrassing Proposal
and others. The display also contains sculptures by Jean-Baptiste
Pigalle and paintings by Charles Antoine Coypel and Jean-François
de Troy. |
