This room belonged to the suite of five Rooms of War Paintings, created by Alexander Briullov after the 1837 fire to extol Russian victories in the period before the Patriotic War of 1812. The display of 18th-century French art features works by the sculptor Jean Antoine Houdon. In the centre of the room is his sculpture of Voltaire that was commissioned by Catherine II. Also to the Empress's commission Jean-Baptiste Chardin painted a Still Life with Attributes of the Arts intended for the Imperial Academy of Arts. Particularly noteworthy in this room are Chardin's Washerwoman and Saying Grace, as well as the landscapes by Claude-Joseph Vernet and the still lifes by Jean-Baptiste Oudry.
