The main staircase in the apartments of the Heir to the Throne, the future Alexander II, was restored by Alexander Briullov after the 1837 fire almost entirely in keeping with Auguste Montferrand's project of the late 1820s. Architecturally the staircase is marked by Classical austerity. The interior is richly decorated with grisaille painting. The lunettes contain allegorical compositions of female figures bowing in front of double-headed eagles. The bas-relief above the windows presents a triumphal procession. The staircase got its present name in memory of the revolutionary events of October 1917, when those storming the Winter Palace used it to gain entry.
