The former Bedroom of the First Reserve Apartment in
the Winter Palace, decorated by Alexander Briullov after the 1837
fire, is used to display part of the collection of British art (16th-19th
centuries). Among the earliest works of English easel painting is
a 1595 portrait of a man by an unknown artist. The majority of the
portrait collection consists of works by famous 18th-century artists,
such as George Romney, Godfrey Kneller and Henry Raeburn. The masterpiece
of the display is Thomas Gainsborough's Portrait of a Lady in Blue.
In the centre of the room is a silver wine-cooler made by Charles
Kandler I. The display-cases contain a collection of medals and cameos. |
