This Study-Bedroom (Giacomo Quarenghi, 1791; Alexander Briullov, 1838-39) was among the memorial rooms in the Winter Palace that always retained their original decor. It was lived in by three heirs to the throne - the future Alexander I, Nicholas I and Alexander II (who continued to use it after his succession). The bust of Alexander II and commemorative plaque mark the fact that the Emperor died in this room after the attack on him in March 1881. The display includes a bureau said to have belonged to Alexander I and portraits of Nikolai Saltykov, the tutor of Catherine II's grandsons, and his wife, as well as works of applied art from the second half of the 18th century.
