This room contains works by Henri Matisse (1869-1954), one of the 20th century's greatest artists. The Hermitage possesses 37 paintings by the artist. The Red Room, Dance and Music were commissioned by the collector Sergei Shchukin especially for his Moscow mansion. Spanish Still Life and Seville Still Life (both 1910-11) depict the hotel room where Matisse lived during a visit to Spain. An interesting work is Fruit, Flowers and the panel "Dance" (1909), with a composition that includes the first version of the Hermitage's Dance (now in New York).
