This room is located in the part of the Winter Palace that contained the rooms of the ladies-in-waiting. The display here is devoted to German Romantic art. The State Hermitage possesses nine paintings by Caspar David Friedrich, the leading figure in that movement. Outstanding among them are On a Sailing-Ship, Night in a Harbour (after 1818) and Moonrise over the Sea (1821). The Triumph of Religion in Art is a programmatic work of the Nazarene school created by its head, Friedrich Johann Overbeck. Visitors' attention is drawn to Karl Friedrich Lessing's work The Royal Couple Mourning the Death of Their Daughter.
