This room contains a display of artefacts from the city of Khara-Khoto, which belonged to the Tangut state of Hsi Hsia before it perished in the 14th century. These works of art lay for some 700 years beneath the sands of the Gobi Desert. There are Buddhist paintings on silk and paper in the Chinese and Tibetan artistic traditions, including The Bodhisattva Kuan-yin, The Deities of the Planets and The Appearance of Buddha Amitabha. Also of interest are wooden blocks for printing books with Tangut texts and a painting of an official that is a splendid example of portraiture from the Sung dynasty (960-1279).
