The display here contains Buddhist artefacts of the
6th to 10th century from the monastery known as the Cave of the Thousand
Buddhas, a cave complex situated near the Chinese city of Dunhuang,
which was the starting point of the Great Silk Road. Presented in
the room are sculpture, murals and paintings on silk and canvas. The
masterpieces here are The Head of a Bodhisattva, a fragment
of a mural including a depiction of the head of a monk - Portrait
of a Disciple of Buddha and a fragment of a lost composition on
silk - The Pure Land of Buddha Amitabha - with a depiction
of a group of donors. The figures of fantastic beasts are guardians
of "the Law of Buddha". In the display-cases are bronze mirrors and
ceramic figurines from the same era. |
